doxie decorating

Found this on Martha Stewart's Pet blog. I LOVE it. My boyfriend is a photographer and has the lighting and white backdrops to make this work. I think I want to wait until Daisy is a little bigger (read: longer).

hoops, anyone?

Sorry for the absence of blog posts this week. Work has been hectic, and when I get home, all I want to do is crawl into bed with my Daisy pillow. We did manage to get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. Went to the playground and chased around the basketball.
This week was eventful for Daisy as well. Went to the vet for her third round of shots. We also started her heartworm preventative. The vet gave us Revolution-- the topical kind, which was new to me as my other dogs had the chewable tablets.
She finished her antibiotics for kennel cough and thankfully is sounding much better. No more hacking in the middle of the night.
I'm anxious for her to have her last round of shots so she can start meeting other dogs. I'm going to take her to the North Jersey dachshund meetup at the end of March.
Two of my coworkers have new puppies around her age, and even though they are bigger breeds than her, I hope she will get a chance to have playdates.
Another to-do list item for after her last round of shots... Puppy Kindergarten! Daisy is so smart. She sits already (and sometimes stays), but we're having trouble with down, shake, etc...
Do other dachshund owners do "roll over" with their dogs? My parents trained my first dachshund to roll over, but I worry that it might hurt her back.

hey daisy
little dog, big city

This weekend we took our little adventurer to the Big Apple! Thanks to a dog friendly Radisson in Koreatown, we were able to bring Daisy for some NYC fun to celebrate the onset of spring.
We arrived in New York around dinner time and checked into the hotel. Nick picked up some Korean takeout and we had a feast in the room because hotel rules stated that you were not to leave pets unattended. This meant, of course, finding a dog friendly bar for the evening.
We went to The Otheroom because of the dog friendly reviews I found online (and a call to confirm).
While this bar allowed dogs-- I wouldn't go so far as to say it was "friendly"-- the lounge was so dark I could barely see anything. The music was really loud and Daisy was getting anxious. We got a bottle of wine and brought it outside. Daisy made new friends, many of whom were doxie owners themselves (or hoped soon to be).
The temperature started to drop, so we hopped a cab back to the hotel for the night.
The next morning, we checked out of the hotel and grabbed some more Korean food. We had a picnic at one of the tables in the park. After feeding the birds and watching Daisy's reaction, we headed towards Times Square.
On our way, we had several people stop and ask if they could take a picture of Daisy. One of the street promoters for a Broadway show stopped to tell us about her rescued dachshund.
Another woman walking two long haired doxies told us about Dachshund Day in April! On April 25, 2009 hundreds of people will bring their dachshunds to Washington Square Park for a mass meet up. I can't wait!! Nick is busy designing t-shirts for the occasion already.
Anyway-- decided to stop in Central Park so Daisy could have a bathroom break. She loved saying hello to all the children and other doggies. We camped out on the grass so Nick and Daisy could take a nap, and I snapped a few photos.
After Central Park, we crossed the street and went into the Time Warner Center (which is another dog friendly location). I laughed seeing Daisy inside a shopping mall. My apprehensions about whether it actually allowed dogs became a mute point as several dogs walked by us. Two cranky older dachshunds scared Daisy a little. I think this is how my dog, Chip would react to her if I bring her home to Texas for a visit!
We walked around the mall and then headed back outside. It was starting to rain, so we went to the car and drove back across the river.
When we came home, Daisy ran around in excitement-- happy to be in a familiar setting again. She circled a few times and collapsed in her bed for the night. What a big day in the city for this little doxie!

dachshund quotes
"Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the dachshund and why he can't be trained and shouldn't be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command."
- E.B. White
"Nothing will turn a man's home into a castle more quickly and effectively than a dachshund."
- Queen Victoria
"You say my nose, sir, reminds you of a dachshund? That is the first flattering remark anyone has made of it."
- Cyrano de Bergerac
"I would like to say I did. I don't believe we do. But I do have a miniature dachshund named Reggie who looks out for us."
- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in 2003, on whether he has duct tape, plastic sheeting and a three-day supply of bottled water at home

I wish the lighting was better, but I didn't have time to adjust the settings before catching this hilarious video.
puppy playtime at petco

Originally uploaded by daisythedoxie
Yesterday, we went to Petco to get Daisy's nails trimmed. The groomer told us that it would be a ten minute wait, but suggested we take Daisy to the back for puppy playtime!
What a wonderful program. Daisy had a blast playing with her new friends Nico, the pitbull mix, and Winston, an adorable fluffy corgi.
I'm so happy that Daisy is so well socialized. She is so playful and fearless (even when it comes to dogs ten times her size!)
We will definitely make puppy playtime a weekly activity.
Daisy was so good getting her nails trimmed, too. The groomer thought she was so cute that she did it on the house for her first visit.
Being adorable sure has its benefits!
We spent the extra ten dollars on new sweaters because they had a great 3/$9.99 deal.

saturday in the park with daisy

a cold walk in the park
Originally uploaded by daisythedoxie
Daisy went on her first walk yesterday. After a few initial moments of protest because of the cold, Daisy warmed up to the idea of walking. Especially after she saw all the other dogs around the lake. She wanted to say hi to everyone... even the dogs 10 times her size. We met a schipperke (which I only recognized because my good friend in elementary school had one named, skipper), a pomeranian, a golden retriever, a giant standard poodle and even another dachshund named Ziggy!
Ziggy's owner told us about a dachshund sized potty tray which I may have to invest in, and we also mused about how dachshunds love to sleep in their owners' beds.
All in all, it was a lovely day. It got too chilly for Daisy, so I tucked her into my jacket. She was so tired when we got back. She even crawled into her crate on her own for the first time. It really seems like she's starting to feel at home. The first few days she would follow me everywhere. I was afraid to step on her unwittingly. Now she entertains herself (and us, indirectly) and it's great to see her so comfortable in her surroundings.
